In 2025, the average roof replacement cost for a roof was $17,631, according to the 2025 U.S. Roof Report, The State of America's Roofs, published by Verisk. Roof costs can vary significantly as roofing contractors consider many variables when preparing your roof cost estimate, including:
- Home size – The size of your roof is typically the biggest cost factor. Cost per square usually includes materials and installation.
- The type of roofing materials you choose impact roof cost. GAF provides a range of asphalt shingle types, as well as metal and solar, depending on your needs. The roofing accessories you select also impact cost.
- Slope and pitch also influence cost.
- Location – The area you live in — its cost of living, climate, local building codes and permit requirements — are variables that also factor into the cost of your new roof.

The size of your roof is measured by “roofing squares,” defined as exactly 100 square feet per roofing square. Measuring in roofing squares is unique to the roofing industry, and understanding how these measurements work can be a vital part of planning your roof repair or replacement.
To determine how many roofing squares of shingles your home might need, divide the number of square feet of roof surface area by 100 to get the roofing square number. The number of shingles per roofing square varies by product.
Shingles come in all different types, styles, and colors. However, asphalt shingles are the most common roof shingle in the industry today. Specifically, there are two types of asphalt shingle — architectural shingles and 3-tab shingles. While 3-tab shingles were the standard for decades, architectural asphalt shingles are significantly more common today.
Here’s a look at the different types of roofing shingles available so that you can make an informed choice for your needs.
Impact-resistant shingles are measured by simulating the impacts of hail and then recording and classifying the results. In particular, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global testing and certification agency, developed the UL 2218 standard, which uses steel balls of varying sizes dropped twice on installed shingles from specific heights. The shingles are then examined for signs of visible cracking.
Depending on the results of the test, an impact-resistant shingle will be assigned a Class 3 or Class 4 ranking with Class 4 being the highest.
