For residential homes with low-slope roof areas, GAF LIBERTY™ has long been a trusted roofing solution. The SBS self-adhering roofing system, which includes LIBERTY™ Self-Adhering Cap Sheet, LIBERTY™ Self-Adhering Base/Ply Sheet along with LIBERTY ™ Asphalt Primer and LIBERTY™ Flashing Cement accessories, ideal for porches, garages, carports and sheds, now comes in two new, popular colors—Pewter Gray and Barkwood—and has earned its UL 2218A Class 4 impact resistance rating.
Earning UL 2218 Class 4 Impact Resistance
The GAF LIBERTY™ two-ply system recently earned its UL 2218A Class 4 rating—the highest rating available today for impact resistance, which opens it up for use in more markets that experience severe weather conditions. The two-ply, impact-resistant system consists of the both the Base/Ply and Cap Sheets.
GAF Product Manager Todd Weiner explains that LIBERTY™ can now also complement GAF's full line of impact-resistant shingles. "This is a great system for any homeowners with low-slope residential roof areas who want impact resistance protection as well as a FORTIFIED™ roof," says Weiner. "To help educate homeowners, we have new updated marketing materials, including a wind uplift chart that shows wind uplift ratings for the system, which is important as it relates to the FORTIFIED system."
New Color Options for Homeowners
Also new for GAF LIBERTY™ is the addition of two popular colors, bringing the total number of color options to nine. Weiner says the team is excited to offer the new shades, and contractors and homeowners are loving the additional options: "The new Pewter Gray and Barkwood colors better complement our most popular Timberline® and other GAF asphalt shingles, which better fits what our customers are looking for."
Weiner explains that the new colors are gaining traction since their release for good reason: "This provides our homeowners with the aesthetic that they are looking for when complimenting their shingle color on their low-slope area. Providing more color options for our homeowners allows for a cohesive look of blending our shingles with the low-slope areas and not seeing something that may appear to be out of place."
The Right Choice for Residential Homes
Weiner notes that traditionally rolled roofing products have required the use of torches or hot asphalt during installation, which is not ideal for residential homes. "For LIBERTY™, it installs quickly and easily without the hassles of bulky equipment or open flames on your roof, which may be intimidating."
Homeowners can also take comfort in the performance of the system, as GAF LIBERTY™ features multiple layers providing durable protection for the residential low-slope areas of your property.
Ease of Installation
The convenient peel-and-stick properties of the GAF LIBERTY™ system bring other benefits to contractors, including versatile installation options available, perfect for primed low-slope roof areas (¼:12 - 3:12) of your residential property. Minimal set-up and clean-up time, which can speed up installation as compared with mopped SBS systems.
Installation requires two people and four easy steps. First, prime the deck with LIBERTY™ Asphalt Primer to promote a tough durable bond for asphaltic systems. Then, the LIBERTY™ Self-Adhering Base/Ply Sheet is installed by rolling it out and peeling off the release film, followed by using a weighted roller to remove wrinkles and trapped air.

Next, LIBERTY™ Flashing Cement is applied at the edge of the roof before the installation of edge metal, and finally, the system is completed with the LIBERTY™ Self-Adhering Cap Sheet. You may use the flashing cement, while sealing end laps on the cap sheets. Check out the new LIBERTY™ Roofing System Installation Overview video for a quick step by step application process.
A Complete System and Warranty
Whether your customer is getting a new GAF roofing system on their home and they have some low-slope roof areas, or just the low-slope area, offering a complete system with complimentary colors and an inclusive warranty can set you apart from competitors.
"The LIBERTY™ system, just by itself, could be covered up to 20 years* when you're using our entire family of components," says Weiner.
"When you have somebody who's installing new shingles, but they have that back deck, what easier way than to just add an addendum to their Silver Pledge™ or Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty. When they're using all four components, they can get the 20-year Limited Warranty covering the manufacturing defects, and they can also get 10 years workmanship coverage with the Silver Pledge™ and 15 years with the Golden Pledge®."
