What is a starter strip shingle?

GAF starter strips help protect against blow-offs at the eaves and rakes, can unlock stronger wind warranty coverage for qualifying shingles¹ and eliminate the need to manually cut up 3-tab shingles to make starter strips.

Installation steps

Note: The starter course should overhang eaves and rakes by ¼"– ¾" (6 mm – 19mm). Where drip edge extends out from the eave and rake edge, starter roll can be installed flush to the drip edge.

Rake Installation: Position the starter roll to overlap the eave edge starter course by at least 3", remove the release film and firmly press into place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our proprietary Dura Grip™ adhesive creates a strong bond between shingle layers. This long, black strip of tacky adhesive activates after installation when sunlight heats the shingles.

No, QuickStart® Peel & Stick Starter Roll does not require nailing if the deck-side adhesive is given enough time to fully bond to the substrate. Nailing is necessary only if the starter roll will be walked on before it bonds completely. Always read full application instructions at GAF.COM before using or installing GAF products.

As its name suggests, QuickStart® Peel & Stick Starter Roll and all GAF starter strip shingles are installed along the eave and rake at the start of shingle installation.

In keeping with good roofing practice, apply GAF QuickStart® Peel & Stick Starter Roll when the substrate is dry and the air temperature is between 45ºF and 120ºF (7ºC and 49ºC).

GAF QuickStart® Peel & Stick Starter Roll is versatile as it can be used with most standard and metric-sized asphalt shingles.
