What is a starter strip shingle?

GAF starter strips help protect against blow-offs at the eaves and rakes, can unlock stronger wind warranty coverage for qualifying shingles1 and eliminate the need to manually cut up 3-tab shingles to make starter strips.

Installation Steps

  1. Roofing contractor installing GAF WeatherBlocker premium starter strip shingles over a blue leak barrier at the roof edge.

    Step 1

    Install first starter course, such as WeatherBlocker™ Premium Starter Strip Shingles.
  2. Roofer positioning and cutting StarterMatch starter strip shingles over roof underlayment.

    Step 2

    Install second starter course, using StarterMatch® Starter Strip Shingles.
  3. Roofing worker using a utility knife to trim 5 inches from the rake edge of a starter strip shingle.

    Step 3

    Trim 5" from rake edge of first strip and continue with full-size starter strips.
  4. Roofer using a nail gun on a GAF starter strip over StormGuard leak barrier.

    Step 4

    Be sure to place starter strip 1/4" - 3/4" over eave and rake edges and nail at least 6" above the butt edge of the starter strip.
