Solar roof warranties and certifications: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Purchasing a GAF Energy solar roof option is a large investment for your home, but you can rest easy knowing your roof is covered. Every Timberline Solar® shingle is covered by the Timberline Solar® Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty. However, you can speak with your GAF-certified roofer about additional warranty options available.
UL7103 is the national safety standard for Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). BIPV is a solar power technology that incorporates solar-generating materials into building components, such as roofs. The UL Certification indicates a product or service meets local and federal environmental and safety regulations. This signals to consumers that the manufacturer follows standards for quality and safety. Timberline Solar® was the first product in the world to be certified to this standard.

Standard Industries, the world’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, launched GAF Energy in 2019 to provide GAF-certified contractors with the products and training needed to install new roofs with solar-integrated power systems.

Contractors enrolled in the GAF factory-certified contractor programs are independent contractors and are not employees of GAF or GAF Energy. Your GAF-certified roofer will install your new roof, and a GAF-Energy representative will come to finalize your new solar roof and connect it to the local grid.

No, Timberline Solar® is a roof system that directly integrates solar technology into traditional lighter-weight roofing materials and processes. This new system consists of a revolutionary nailable solar shingle, which we call the Timberline Solar® Energy Shingle® (ES). The ES is assembled domestically at GAF Energy’s manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Texas.

Timberline Solar® incorporates solar technology into traditional roofing materials and processes, using the world’s first nailable solar shingle, which lays flush against the roof deck, providing durability and protection with instant aesthetic appeal.

Additionally, the solar shingles are installed using a nail gun, rather than lag bolts, reducing the number of holes in your roof to maintain waterproofing.

With constant utility rate inflation, Timberline Solar® was designed to be an affordable solar roofing option. Your energy bill may be lower when you use solar power versus power from the electrical grid.

Timberline Solar® is not available outside of the United States at this time. We are continuously evaluating opportunities to expand our reach and serve more customers worldwide in the future.

We are actively working to expand our reach and bring Timberline Solar® to more areas. However, expanding into new regions involves several considerations to ensure we deliver the high standard of service and quality that our customers expect. These may include:

Service Crews: We recruit and train skilled installers who are familiar with our products and installation processes.

Policies and Regulations: We carefully review and comply with local requirements to ensure our installations meet applicable standards and regulations.

Roofing Partnerships: We work closely with roofing partners in each area to ensure seamless integration of our solar roof with different types of roofs.

Logistics and Infrastructure: We strive to ensure that we can deliver our products and services effectively and on time.

“Out of Service Area” means we are currently unable to provide our services, including installations, maintenance, or support in that particular location. There are various factors that affect Timberline Solar® being available in a given area. We are working to expand our availability across the country so Timberline Solar® can be available nationwide soon.

The best time to go solar is when you are replacing your roof. To get started, get in touch with a GAF-certified roofer.

A consultation will be necessary to check and see if your home is a good candidate for solar. We want to ensure you get the best solar powered experience possible so we will check the direction, size and pitch of your roof.

Once your new solar roof is installed, we will work with an electrician to connect your system and guide you through the permitting process. Then just sit back and enjoy a high-quality, waterproof solar roof that could help pay for itself through electrical bill savings and potential tax incentives (check with your tax advisor to see if your state is eligible).
