Get help from local roofers certified by GAF
Contractors certified by GAF must be insured and licensed in the state where their principal place of business is located (if required). In addition, GAF may consider factors such as years of roofing experience and customer reviews. Only contractors certified by GAF can offer our enhanced warranties on qualifying roofing systems.1
1Contractors enrolled in GAF certification programs are not employees or agents of GAF, and GAF does not control or otherwise supervise these independent businesses. Contractors may receive benefits, such as loyalty rewards points and discounts on marketing tools from GAF for participating in the program and offering GAF enhanced warranties, which require the use of a minimum amount of GAF products. Your dealings with a Contractor, and any service they provide to you, are subject to the Contractor Terms of Use. Visit gaf.com/gaf-contractor-terms-of-use for details.
Understand roof replacement costs
Your first step is to have contractors perform a roof inspection to assess damage and help you determine if you need a roof repair or replacement. If you’re replacing your roof, understand that many factors can impact your cost, including materials, location, and labor. GAF’s online tools can help get a free estimate on a new roof and better understand costs and payment options.

FAQs
The roof replacement process usually starts when you notice water damage inside your home (brown stains, bubbling paint, dripping water) or roof damage outside your home (loose, cracked, or buckling shingles), or when you know your roof is old enough to require proactive improvement. To help you find local roofing contractors, consider using online locators from established manufacturers, like gaf.com/contractor, to schedule site visits and estimates. Obtain multiple quotes and let each contractor’s unique approach teach you more about the roof replacement process before making your final decision.
The contractor you choose to repair or replace your roof will provide direction on how to prepare your home. While all roof projects differ, you can expect to be asked to clear space for a dumpster and for product delivery. Be mindful of children and pets’ safety throughout the project. Keep your home’s exterior free from clutter, and protect fragile interior items from hammer vibrations and possible dust and debris.
Every roof repair or replacement job is different, however a typical residential roof replacement should take 1–2 days. An average U.S. home requires approximately 25 roof squares, which covers approximately 2,500 square feet of roof area. An experienced contractor should be able to remove or “tear off” the existing roof system down to the decking and install the new system in two working days. Roof replacement projects of greater size or complexity, or projects displaying obvious structural damage, Be warned that rare cases of damaged, or otherwise insufficient, roof decking—only revealed after roof removal—might affect timing and costs.
When deciding whether to repair or replace a roof, many homeowners consider the noticeable damage along with the age of the roof. Isolated instances of leaks, loose shingles, mold, or other damage might require repair on a newer roof. However, the same issues on an older roof—as well as widespread curled or brittle shingles or structural damage—might require replacement. The contractors providing estimates can offer guidance.
GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, and only about 7% of roofers in North America are invited into the GAF Certified™ program. We work closely with our certified contractors.1 Contractors certified by GAF must be insured and licensed in states where they operate, if required. GAF also considers years of roofing experience and customer reviews in the certification process.
