When choosing between HD polyiso cover boards and gypsum coverboards, keep three basic comparisons in mind:
Lighter on the roof means easier on your crew
HD Polyiso cover boards are less than half the weight per board of gypsum cover boards, allowing more efficient packing (double packs are practical), faster craning, and higher capacity truck loads.
At less than half the weight per board of ¼” gypsum cover board — and as little as 1/10th the weight of ⅝” gypsum — HD Polyiso cover boards can reduce deadloading on the roof, thereby contributing to a potential reduction in structural costs.
And that's not all. At 11 to 13 lb. per 4' x 8' board HD Polyiso is easy for one person to maneuver. Gypsum cover boards weigh as much as 100 lb. apiece, requiring, for safety, two people per board.
Finally, HD Polyiso cover board pallets do not require breakdown for weight distribution the way gypsum pallets do, saving time and labor.
Add insulation with your impact resistance
Choosing an HD Polyiso cover board instead of a gypsum cover board adds an R-value of 2.5 to the roof - 5x the insulation value of the gypsum board. Depending on the specification, that additional R-value can mean the difference between adding a full layer of polyiso insulation, or allow a thinner polyiso layer, saving costs. In projects where compressive strength of 80 to 140 psi is sufficient for your impact and structural demands, the addition of a 2.5 R-value can save significant insulation costs.
The 2.5 R-value of an HD Polyiso cover board is much more than an add-on. When calculated into the overall goals of your roof installation, a 2.5 R-value cover board layer gives you flexibility to select thinner polyiso boards for lower layers while still achieving your target insulation value.
Take, for instance, an R-value 30 specification:
- Choosing a gypsum cover board would require two (2) 2.6" Iso board layers, each with an R-value of 15. The gypsum contributes virtually nothing (R-value .5).
- Choosing an HD Polyiso cover board (R-value 2.5) enables you to use one (1) layer of 2.6" (R-value 15) boards, and a second layer of 2.2" (R-value 12.6) Iso boards. Depending on the size of the roof, the savings achieved by swapping the second 2.6" Iso layer for a 2.2" layer can be quite significant. Even a 500 sq. roof could reap thousands in savings.
PSI vs Productivity — Weigh the opportunity
While certain roofs are suited to a cover board with a psi in the hundreds - to achieve a required VSH rating, or to support specific heavy overburden such as amenity spaces or extensive HVAC or solar equipment - many roofs only require an SH rating, and will not be loaded with heavy equipment. For those roofs, it's important to weigh the benefits of a lighter HD Polyiso board.
