  • "I would not recommend this company. We got a quote from them to install two attic fans and decided to use them as the price seemed fair. In the midst of installing the first fan the guy literally left the job. The young man helping him was left stranded not knowing what to do. He had to pack up and leave. No one from the company contacted us to let us know what happened. We had to contact them. It took them over a week to get someone else out to our home to finish the job, knowing there was incomplete work on our roof and it was open to rain and other potential damage. This was after us calling them repeatedly. The second person who came to finish the job left a wooden board just nailed to our roof. Again, we had to call them to get someone back out to take the board off of the roof. This company is very unresponsive and unprofessional. Save yourself some hassle and use someone else."

  • "LOOK AT THE PHOTOS! We hired Architectural Exterior Design (AED) to fix a leak that was occurring on the 3rd floor apartment, in the "3rd" bedroom. Ryan a good salesman, sold my wife on the need to repair the corner in the photos (Nov 2020). We were trying to avoid a $10K masonry repair bill. The leak did not stop, and we had to pay the 10k to repair the mortar on the heavily weathered side, which ultimately stopped the leak (Dec 2020), and had the ceiling repair in the bedroom (Jan 2021). No further leaks have occurred after the masonry work. When we noticed we had a leak in another portion of the building, I examined the work that AED performed and it was falling apart less than 6 months later. As I was bidding roofers including AED to fix the leaking portion of the roof, I asked them to look (not touch) the portion in the photos, they all said it was terrible work. Ryan Merritt himself said it was not good work, and he would fix it if I "ordered new work with us" in May 2021. (He has since denied this, and won't stand by his warranty). We continued to call AED, they subsequently sent out two employees June 29, 2021 and both said the work and quality were bad. They both said AED should fix it as it is bad workmanship. Still not hearing back from AED, we kept calling, and finally Ryan Merritt came out today 7/22/2021, and refused to do the work. Says the roof is not leaking, so I will not repair it, "pay me $250 for coming out here". He tried to give me reasons and excuses why his work was falling apart. No where in the contract does it mention leaky or water damage, but IT DOES mention workmanship. If you watch the video attached, the roof over 10 years old barely has any seams coming apart, but AED's work less than 6 months was falling apart. For mentioning his employees said the roof was bad, he said they are fired, they don't know what they are talking about, so they shouldn't work for him. Furthermore, he refused to honor the warranty, do any further work, and demanded money. He threatened that he would win in a legal case due to "no leaking" and I would pay for "the best lawyers YOUR money can buy" for him. "I'll call your bluff and you won't sue me, you'll lose." If you read the other 1 star reviews, run from this company, this is not an isolated incidence, but a pattern. I wished I read the reviews before hiring this company. LOOK AT THE PHOTOS!"

  • "I hired this company to repair my roof as I was selling my home and in need of roof repairs. My mother in law used this company and was pretty happy. I contracted them and agreed to a price, paid half as a deposit. The day the roof was to be completed. The guy that showed up didn’t know what repairs were to be done. The owner of the company had not brought him up to speed on the job. I had to show him the list and pictures of the repairs I sent to the owner of the company to get the job started. To my surprise another roofer should up that was not an employee of this company, he said they had hired him to do the job. Right there breach of contract. No worries I moved ahead with the job because I was in a bind and needed the repairs to close on the sale of my home. With in two days one section of the shingles had blown up and some of the tabs had broken off. I called the owner and asked if he could come out and repair the eight to ten shingles that had blown off. He said he was to busy. Yet he wanted final payment. The roof didn’t pass inspection and our closing company was to hold the final payment for the roof in escrow until the roofing company fulfilled their responsibility to correct the issue. Instead the owner of the company Ryan. Called our real estate agent and commenced to scream and yell at her at 8 am, an innocent bystander, threatened her stating he was going to file a lien on the home and hung up. Big man, sounds like a bully to me. Acting immensely immature. Who does that? I have bought and sold a total of sixty plus properties in Hampton Roads, and have never dealt with a person that would not warrant their work and or repair their mistakes. Plus lie and not even use their own employees. Ryan is a perfect example of what’s wrong with America today. No respect for the customer and instead of great customer service, he plays the blame game. Someone that does not oversee the jobs, never comes on site, has no one inspect the work, doesn’t stand by the work performed under the name of his corporation. Yet expects to be paid for a job not completed as promised. This stinks because I really wanted to like this guy. It’s a roof it’s not brain surgery. It would have taken less time to fix the poor work than it did arguing with him over text and phone calls. Make your decision to use this company wisely and wait for his response to my comments as I am sure the blame will be cast on the customer as he seems to have done in past comments as well he has with me."

  • "We were referred to Architectural Exterior Design by another roofing contractor, since they are one of the few who deal with membrane roofs. They were prompt, scheduling a walk-through for the next business day and arrived on time for said appointment. They took the time to walk me through the issues found, and gave me a reasonable quote to fix without pressuring me to act at that moment. When they came to fix the issue, they were again quick, prompt, and courteous. I will definitely call them again next time I have a roofing issue."

  • "I needed a full roof replacement and engaged with 5 businesses in Virginia Beach to get a quote; AED was one of 3 vendors that took the time to reply to my inquiry on their website. Their quote was priced in the middle of the three, and I'm very VERY glad I selected AED to do the work. I believe I received the best possible materials at my desired price point and quality workmanship offered by a trustworthy vendor. If you'd like to know more, please read my explanation below to understand my experience with the other 2 vendors and why I chose AED to do a full roof replacement for my home: 1) The cheaper quote was for virtually identical materials with the exception of the architectural shingles, and was $900 less than AED. The contractor who gave me that quote was at my house for all of 10 minutes, walked all over my roof (which I later realized is entirely unnecessary for quoting a roof) and did not explain any of the service at all. He came out, climbed a ladder, climbed down and then looked at me and said, "I've got what I need, I'll email you my number." Needless to say, that left nothing but a bad taste in my mouth. 2) The more expensive quote from another vendor who came out and provided a thorough explanation of the process and materials, which ended up being IDENTICAL to the materials offered by AED. This vendor wanted $2000 MORE to do the work with identical materials and and identical guarantee & warranty period from the manufacturer. Although they did present themselves professionally at my property during the initial visit, I received a follow-up sales call about 7 days later from a different person, offering me a discount on materials below the quoted price if I would agree to have another in-home sales appointment. Since I already had their quote and an explanation of the work to be performed, I asked her why the additional home visit was necessary since this would require me taking time away from work to be there. I asked if she could simply tell me what the revised quote was to do the job and she insisted that it was impossible to tell without sending someone back to my house in-person. I asked if she could ballpark the % of discount so I could do the math myself, and she became somewhat irate and accused me of "not wanting to save money." I told her I would gladly accept a lower price for the quote I already had (which had required 60 minutes of my time away from work) over the phone, but she was unwilling to offer me a discount verbally and became verbally abusive. I had to hang up on her to end the conversation and immediately threw that quote in the trash. 36 hours later I had AED at my house offering me an identical roof with identical materials and warranty for $2k less than their competitor. I signed the check on-the-spot. The point of this long-winded story is that on the path to a roof replacement, you will meet vendors that are hasty and potentially unscrupulous, as well as high-pressure salespeople who will try to sell you a product above market rate because they don't think you'll go through the trouble to get multiple quotes from multiple businesses. ABSOLUTELY DO GET MULTIPLE QUOTES, but if you're anything like me, you'll end up getting the work done by AED ;-)"

  • "My wife and I contracted AED to rebuild a large balcony on our second story using DecTec as the finished surface. The owner, Ryan Merritt, came to our home personally to review every detail of the original contract and answer any questions. Once the work began and the old balcony was ripped out, severe structural damage from water intrusion was found amongst other issues with the original construction. Ryan quickly got a structural engineer involved and we sat down and went over a change order to address the new, much larger scope. Ryan's communication through the entire project was great. He kept us up to date on work and any schedule conflicts or changes, which there were some with weather and the holidays. Ryan's team was great as well, including Oley and Dwayne that I was able to speak with routinely. The jobsite was cleaned everyday throughout the project and Ryan was quick to fix anything that his team or we noticed that was not perfect. We are extremely happy with our finished balcony, despite the extreme overrun on our original budget due to unforeseen issues, no fault of the AED team. We highly recommend AED for this type of work and would not hesitate to call them for work in the future."

  • "The roofing job was excellent! Price, workmanship and timely completion. when the job was completed (only one day), the cleanup left no sign of any residual trash whatsoever. The recycle dumpster was also removed the following day. We are totally pleased with the job performed!"

    - L.D.

  • "I dealt with Dwayne. He was punctual (unlike other companies I got proposals from) and very professional. The whole proposal presentation was well prepared. They do give Military Discount. He returned all my phone calls in timely manner. The crew showed up on time, very polite. Roof was done by 1600 the same day. They made sure everything was cleaned up including any scuffs on siding. I was nothing but pleased with them. I would strongly recommend them to my friends based on my experience."

  • "AED roofing replaced a roof on our rental property in Virginia Beach this past spring. They did an outstanding job, they were very helpful with providing samples to choose from and gave a fair estimate. The work was started and completed on dates quoted. The crew did an excellent job on the clean up. They also helped us on our current home with the replacement of gutters, also another pleasant experience. Ryan Merritt the owner is very professional and friendly. This company is highly recommended from our family to yours!"
