There’s a housing boom underway this month in the inner-city neighborhoods of Paterson and employees from GAF in Wayne, NJ are helping to make it happen.
The GAF employees are part of the 800 volunteers from 39 companies taking part in the annual Corporate Challenge program run by Paterson Habitat for Humanity. Participating companies send teams of employee volunteers to build homes and also make corporate contributions to Paterson Habitat.
“This is the most intense four weeks of home building and fundraising we have all year,” explained Barbara Dunn, executive director of Paterson Habitat. “Some corporations have been sending volunteers every year since Corporate Challenge back in 1994, but every year we also get new people and it’s a great experience for all of us.”
GAF’s corporate volunteers put in a full day of construction work on a Habitat home, working alongside volunteers from the family that will own the house.
“It’s a welcome opportunity for our people to come together and give hands-on support to a cause we believe in,” said Alyssa Hall, spokesperson for GAF.
This year's Corporate Challenge runs from June 1 through June 28 and is the 18th consecutive year the event has been held. Despite the troubled economy, Paterson Habitat reports that support for Corporate Challenge remains strong and this year’s Challenge is expected to raise $230,000 and help build 5 homes.
