GAF Donates Toward Sasha Bruce Project to Benefit Homeless Youth

GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, has joined with Reed Construction Data and Hanley Wood to help renovate and expand an abandoned building for use by Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY). As part of projectDC, on May 16, 2012, volunteers will participate in a site renovation project to benefit at-risk and homeless youth in the Washington, D.C., area.

The property was donated to SBY for use as service-enriched transitional housing. The goal of the project is to convert a community eyesore into an energy-efficient transitional home for homeless young people seeking to develop skills for their future.

GAF donated its Timberline® Cool Series Shingles to the project, along with WeatherWatch® XT Leak Barrier and Deck-Armor Roof Deck Protection. Timberline® Cool Series highly reflective shingles can help to reduce attic temperatures, keeping the home cooler and offering energy-cost savings of up to 15% in some climates. The shingles also incorporate GAF’s proprietary Advanced Protection® Technology, which results in shingles that offer improved performance—including superior durability and wind resistance—while reducing the use of precious natural resources. As with all GAF Lifetime Shingles, they pass ASTM’s two toughest wind tests—ASTM D3161 Class F 110 mph and ASTM D7158 Class H 150 mph—and carry GAF’s Lifetime limited warranty.

SBY is a private, non-profit youth and family services agency. Its YouthBuild Program has an outstanding record of providing classroom and worksite-based education and apprenticeships that result in marketable job skills and work credentials to keep young people involved and active in their communities.

“Our workforce development program has extensive experience in training young adults for construction trades,” stated Jim Beck, MNA, SBY’s Director of Development. “Of trainees entering our SBY YouthBuild workforce development program over the past eight years, none had completed high school and all were unemployed. Despite these challenges, 100% of those completing the program received nationally recognized construction industry certification.”
