GAF Materials Corporation Participates in Newly Launched NYC°Cool Roofs Program

GAF Materials Corporation recently announced its partnership with the NYC °Cool Roofs Program, donating both material and labor towards the installation of a reflective coating on a roof owned by the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged (JASA) located at 310 East 3rd Street.

NYC Service and the NYC Department of Buildings launched the volunteer-based NYC °Cool Roofs program in the spring of 2010 with the goal of installing reflective coating on one million square feet of roofing by October and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030. Installing cool roofing products like reflective coatings helps to reduce cooling costs, energy usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. The nyc.gov website states that: “a cool roof absorbs 80 percent less heat than traditional dark colored roofs and can lower roof temperatures by up to 60 degrees and indoor temperatures by 10 to 20 degrees on hot days.”

“Energy conservation is very important to JASA,” stated Verna Portuguese, property manager at 310 East 3rd Street. “We want to thank the mayor for pushing this initiative forward and thank GAF for donating their product and their time towards improving the sustainability of the building.”

The GAF team is excited to have contributed to such a worthy cause. “GAF is so pleased to have taken part in this groundbreaking program,” stated Lynn Picone, Senior Product Manager at GAF. “We are a company focused on sustainability efforts through innovation and are proud to have our cool roof products involved in such a positive effort -- the opportunity to give back with an act of corporate volunteerism is just icing on the cake.”

The team of volunteers was made up of GAF’s field inspectors as well as people from technical services and the sales and marketing departments. They installed Topcoat® MB Plus, an environmentally friendly water-based product on the JASA roof. MB Plus is designed for use over asphaltic roof membranes; it exceeds the reflectivity requirements of ENERGY STAR® and is also a Cool Roof Rating CouncilSM rated product.
