Roofing and Social Distancing
GAF factory-certified contractors* have a variety of digital tools that allow them to manage your project - from estimate to installation - without ever needing to enter your home. Before starting, check your state and local government websites to be sure that there are no restrictions on roofing that may impact your project.
Everything can be done remotely
All key decisions can be made virtually using digital tools, including choosing a shingle, signing a contract and making payment.
Financing Options
- Contractor Financing
- Insurance Coverage
- FHA Title I Home & Property Improvement Loan
- Home Equity Loan
- Personal Loan
Project Scope
Work with your contractor to understand the variables impacting your cost estimate - such as issues being addressed, and product and warranty choices - and align on a plan (e.g. repair now, replace later) to protect your home and family, and stay within budget.
Make the most of your phone consultation
Whether you are connecting over the phone or meeting “face to face” with video chat, be sure to ask the following questions to determine which roofer is right for your project.
- Where are you located? Choosing someone from your community improves their ability to quickly address issues that may arise during or post installation
- How long have you been in business? Choosing an established company can help ensure upfront quality and back-end support
- Are you certified by manufacturers? GAF annually verifies contractor licenses (where required), insurance and years in business before granting the factory-certified designation. As a matter of fact, only 2% of roofers in the U.S. qualify to be recognized as GAF Master Elite™ Contractors
- Can you provide references? You can request references and addresses of recently completed projects, to see their work. It’s also a good idea to check reviews online (Google, Better Business Bureau, etc.)
- Are you properly licensed and insured? GAF requires factory-certified roofers to carry at least $1M in liability insurance, workman’s compensation and state licensing where required
- How are you adjusting to social distancing guidelines? Ask about their end to end process and how they will deliver an accurate estimate and high-quality installation without entering your home

How to do a roof inspection
To help your roofer prepare an accurate estimate, you can share photos or video from inside and around your home. Here are the areas they typically check:
Tip: Use flash and zoom for higher quality images
Inside:
- Attic - all visible areas that are safely accessible
- Walls / Ceilings - cracks, damage or stains
- Ventilation - particularly in bathrooms
Outside:
- Roof - from the ground, noting any penetrations, venting
- Gutters - any warping, separation
- Soffits - stains, vents
- Chimney - and any other masonry
- Property - each side of the house and surrounding area, including siding/façade, walkways, driveways, patios/porches, decks, yard, heating and air conditioning units, landscaping or fixtures near the home

Preparing for installation
You and your family can remain safely inside your home while your contractor handles installation and repair procedures outside. You can expect a lot of noise and vibration, so please follow these steps to protect your home and belongings:
Before:
- Share a map of your property that include areas to be protected (e.g. gardens, AC units)
- Move cars and lawn furniture away from the perimeter of the house
- Take down wall art, pictures, mirrors, etc. and secure furniture and valuables
During:
- Wear ear plugs or use sound machines
- Move to the lowest level of your home
- Reassure pets and children
