Commercial Roofing - Green Roof Central

A number of leading architectural firms have already committed that, by 2015, they will only use products with available HPD and EPD information and will not allow products from manufacturers who are not transparent about their materials to appear in their firm library.

GAF is committed to greater transparency and is strongly positioned to adapt to the future of green building.

What is an HPD?

HPD stands for Health Product Declaration, a standard format used to disclose the product content and related health information of building products and materials. HPD was conceived through the HPD Collaborative a customer-led, non-profit organization comprised of manufacturers, designers, architects, and contractors to help meet the needs of their customers. GAF was the first roofing manufacturer to be a member and participate in the industry pilot of the program in 2011. The Collaborative will continue to work on improving the HPDs and disclosures to further provide transparency and ease-of-use.

The following GAF products have an associated HPD. We are always publishing more HPD's. If your project will require one for a product that is not listed, please contact us.

What is an EPD?

An EPD is an Environmental Product Declaration, an internationally recognized standardized method to analyze and communicate the lifecycle environmental and health impacts of products or services. Areas addressed include energy use and emissions to air, soil, water, and waste generation.

The following GAF products have published EPDs.

Material Health Certificate

Building owners, facility managers, and design professionals have a growing interest in knowing what chemicals and ingredients are in the products that make up the buildings in which they live and work. The Material Health Certificate uses methodology developed by the Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Institute Certification to provide manufacturers with an assessment of supply chain and formulation, and determine and communicate any identified hazards.

The following GAF product has an associated Material Health Certificate:

Why does it matter?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) uses an updated rating system called LEED® v4, a rigorous building certification program that provides credits for the use of green materials or disclosure of health and environmental impacts. It’s a standard tool for rating building sustainability. The use of EPDs and HPDs will help increase material transparency in the building industry and help companies think green.
