Storm-Damaged Roof?
We’re Your Trusted Solution!

When your home’s been hit by a storm, don’t trust your roof repair to just anyone. GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, delivers quality products and a team of factory-certified contractors to help homeowners who have been caught in Mother Nature’s path.

What is Storm Damage?

A storm can take on various forms: it can be a tornado, hurricane, hailstorm, heavy rain, or a snowstorm with strong winds. Here are some details on what that means for your roof.

  • Hailstorms rarely last more than 15 minutes, but the damage can be devastating. Hail pounding on your roof can cause dents, missing asphalt, bruising, or cracking in your shingles.

  • Strong winds that typically accompany storms can cause shingles to crack, bend, or fly off, leaving your roof and the interior of your home vulnerable to leaks or further damage.

Do I Have Damage?

After a storm, assess the damage. Do not climb on the roof yourself, as the roof may be slippery and not structurally sound. Look for any blown-off, ruptured, or cracked shingles and damaged gutters or windows. (A good pair of binoculars can be a big help and keep you safer than climbing a ladder.) Inside, check for any leaks in the ceiling around lights or in the attic. See “Key Danger Signals of a Failing Roof” for more signs that your roof needs repair or replacement. If you have damage, call your local professional roofing contractor or find a factory-certified contractor on gaf.com.

How to Deal with Insurance

Once you choose a contractor, they will recommend you call your insurance company and file a claim. In most cases, your insurance company will send out an insurance adjuster to evaluate the damage and settle the claim with you. Most insurance adjusters are experienced with many elements of a home’s construction, but may not be roofing experts or have the ability to climb on your roof; so have your GAF Factory-Certified Contractor meet your adjuster at your home.

Here are some other things to consider:

  • The settlement amount will likely be able to pay for a new roof similar to what you had before

  • This is a great time to choose the roof and shingle color you want

  • Consult your GAF Factory-Certified Contractor to share options with you

Some cautionary words:
  • Don’t try to settle your own insurance claim – seek professional advice.

  • After a storm, many people claiming to be roofing experts or insurance-claim experts will begin knocking on your door. They’ll claim that you have damage and that they can “get you a new roof.” Many will ask you to sign a “contingency agreement” so they can climb on your roof and take a closer look. This document legally binds your claim to their company.

  • Do not sign anything with anyone until you are sure who you are doing business with and you have determined that you would like to do business with them. While many of these folks are good, hardworking roofing professionals, some may not be.

  • Make sure your contractor is licensed to perform roofing services in your state or municipality. Ask to see a copy of their insurance certificate and call to confirm it is current. Request local referrals and call some to see if they are legitimate.

Which Products Defend Against the Elements?
